The Flip Straw makes staying hydrated second nature. It is smoother, more fun and built for life on the move. We asked our Head of R&D, Niels, how the Flip Straw came to life and why it is such a big upgrade.

What guided your choice of materials for the Flip Straw, and how did circular design principles inform this process? 

Niels: We started from the user’s perspective: the cap had to be convenient, fit seamlessly with our range of products, and feel comfortable to use. Metal, for example, was harsh for the lips, so we chose polypropylene (PP). It’s a material people are used to, it’s safe, durable, and, most importantly, can be properly recycled, making it a perfect fit with our circular design principles.

What makes the Flip Straw unique compared to other drinking accessories on the market? 

Niels: We put a lot of effort into getting the balance just right: leak-proof yet still easy to open. On top of that, it carries the iconic Dopper design. And unlike most straws you can only buy with a whole bottle, we created Flip Straw as a spare part. It fits perfectly with your existing Dopper bottle, and you can trim it to the perfect length yourself. No need to replace the entire bottle.

In what ways is the Flip Straw an improvement on the Sport Cap? 

Niels: The Flip Straw offers a smoother drinking flow while staying leak-proof. Unlike the Sport Cap, which relies on gravity, the straw lets you drink with the bottle upright. It’s also more practical, since the Sport Cap works best when the bottle can be squeezed, which isn’t possible with Dopper. That makes the Flip Straw an easier and more natural way to drink.

If you had to describe the Flip Straw in three words, what would they be and why? 

Niels: Easy: effortless to use. Active: perfectly suited for an on-the-go, active lifestyle. Elegant: sleek look that elevates the overall design.

What steps did you take to make sure the Flip Straw is easy to clean and convenient to use long-term? 

Niels: We designed it, so every part is easy to reach for cleaning, and the pieces come apart easily, making it simple to keep the straw hygienic and long-lasting.

What’s your favourite way to use the Flip Straw? 

Niels: When I have one hand free, like on a crowded train or metro. It makes staying hydrated effortless.

When someone tries the Flip Straw for the first time, what small design details do you hope they notice and appreciate? 

Niels: For the first time in almost 15 years, Dopper changes the way you drink. You sip vertically instead of tilting the bottle, which feels more natural and relaxed. It was also tricky to fit all the components into the original cap design, but we managed to make it work. And the spout? It’s cleverly covered by the rest of the cap, so it’s never left exposed to the world.
