Some problems take a lifetime to solve. "How do you stop a sparkling drink from blowing the lid off?" took us six months to figure out.

We sat down with Niels, our R&D Manager, to take you behind the scenes of the Dopper Travel Mug, from first sketch to store shelf. Turns out, building something that works for every drink, every commute, and every mood you're feeling... is a lot harder than it looks.

Why did the world need another Travel Mug? 

The world needed a Travel Mug that keeps hot drinks hot, cold drinks cold, and sparkling drinks actually sparkling. That last part is where most Travel Mugs fall short. So, we made one ourselves: works for all drinks, opens with one hand, fits in a cupholder, and is built from materials we can actually stand behind.

What makes it more sustainable than other Travel Mugs? 

We work as much as possible with sustainably sourced materials. The mug itself is made from 90% recycled stainless steel, and the cup ring from 50% recycled material. We also made it fully modular so you can clean it properly and replace any part in case it got damaged or you want to customise your mug. And we keep our production footprint as low as possible by shipping only with biofuels.

Which design detail was the hardest to get right? 

Definitely the closing mechanism. Because making it leakproof with sparkling drinks wasn’t easy.

With a standard lid, opening creates a direct release of pressure. Do that with a carbonated drink and the lid blows off. So, we reversed the mechanism: opening the lid triggers a counter-movement that controls the release, keeping everything sealed until you're ready. Simple in theory, but a nightmare in practice.

We spent six months on it, and in the end the fix came down to shaving a tenth of a millimeter off the mold.

How leakproof is leakproof, really? 

We benchmark everything against sparkling drinks because that's the highest pressure you'll encounter. If it holds carbonation, it'll handle your tea or coffee without a second thought. And because of our special lid design, it cannot open by accident. Bascially, it’s 100% leakproof.

What's the first drink you're putting in yours? 

Bean flavored tap water for sure!
