Just like every ingredient influences taste, everything that goes into your Dopper bottle influences its sustainability. And with the Digital Product Passport, you can see exactly which Michelin-worthy ingredients your bottle is made of. From the origin of the materials to its carbon footprint, the DPP offers full transparency in the fight against packaged water.

In this article, our Head of R&D, Niels, spills the beans on how your favourite bottle is created, and why this transparency matters for sustainability.

A Digital Product Passport is a digital record attached to every bottle that stores key information about its lifecycle, with the goal to make product data transparent and traceable.

If sustainability were a recipe, transparency would be the first ingredient. You can’t decide how healthy a dish is unless you know what’s inside, and the same goes for products. It includes:

  • Material type and origin
  • Production and assembly details
  • Environmental impact (like carbon footprint)
  • Reuse, repair and recycling information

Q: Niels, you're in charge of experimenting with different recipes for our Dopper bottles. What do you enjoy the most during the process?

Niels: “For me, the best thing about working at Dopper is working on a product with purpose. That is a product with the right aesthetics, the right usability, and the right sustainability. Everything is designed with the principles of cradle-to-cradle in mind.”

Q: Let’s talk about the Original bottle, the signature dish. Which are the ingredients?

Niels: “Only three, the body, the cup, and the cap. The body and the cap are both made from this 100% bio-based material, waste cooking oils that are collected from restaurants to turn into plastic.''

Q: Different people, different tastes, what if we exchange some of the ingredients?.

Niels: “Next to our Original bottle we also offer different ones, the Steel and Insulated bottle. This steel is 90% recycled steel. That means that scrap, like old furniture, is collected. And all that scrap is then thrown into the furnace and remodelled into our bottles.”

Q: What about lead, does it contain any?

Niels: “No, no, absolutely not. No lead in my kitchen. We've got a full recipe without lead. Because lead would mess up your bottle like pineapple on a pizza.”

Q: What's the worst ingredient that should be avoided at all costs?

Niels: “For me, that would be single-use plastic. It’s expensive, wasteful, and just completely unnecessary.”

Niels: “Yes, and here it gets back to the purpose. The most important thing about plastic is that you use it for the right purpose. Plastic on its own is valuable: it’s strong, it’s flexible, and lightweight. But you should treat it as something valuable and enjoy it, and not just some fast food meal.”

Q: The Original is a Dutch classic. What's the carbon footprint of this bottle?

Niels: “For this particular bottle, the Dopper Original, the carbon footprint for making one is 0.14 kg of CO2. That’s nearly 5 times less than another Dutch speciality, one serving of Croquettes.”

Q: And what makes the Dopper Original bottle the world's most sustainable bottle?

Niels: “We basically looked at every category that applies to Cradle to Cradle Certified®. So, material health, product circularity, social fairness, water stewardship, and energy use. We took all of those categories to improve our recipe.”

Q: Next to our main courses, the bottles, Dopper also serves different side dishes. Tell us about what else is on the menu.

Niels: “Well, we also have the accessories. First, the Carrier. Makes it easier to take your bottle anywhere. Hang it on your backpack, hang it on your trousers. Then, we also have our Sport Caps. They make it easy to get that quick sip out of your bottle when you’re in the gym. Our Cord, a simple, lightweight strap that gives you even more ways to carry your bottle hands-free. And finally, the Flip Straw, perfect for when you want an easy, no-spill drink on the go. And they each have their own individual Digital Product Passports”

Q: To wrap up, would you have a tip for all the readers at home that would help them switch to a more sustainable diet?

Niels: “Of course! And it’s ridiculously easy really: bring your own bottle, and just refill! Sustainable ingredients, sustainable future.''

“Well, a bottle is something that touches your lips every day. So, I think then it’s important that everyone knows where the ingredients are coming from. Consumers get more critical, and that’s great. Let people ask where it’s coming from!” — Niels, Head of R&D
